1916

In 1916, twenty years after establishment, the Geelong Art Gallery Association was finally settling into their new premises. It was a year focused on finding their feet and dealing with the challenges of maintaining their own space.

Geelong celebrated its first Gala Day in 1916, a colourful and spectacular festival originally created to raise money for the Red Cross Society. Although put on hold in 2020, Gala Day continues to raise funds for Barwon Health—University Hospital Geelong, and features plenty of sounds, colours, magic and performers parading down Geelong's local streets.
