1926

The Geelong and District Peace Memorial was officially opened in October 1926 by Lord Arthur Somers, Premier of Victoria at the time. Somers also opened the Barwon Bridge (Moorabool Street) in August of that same year.

The Memorial was built to commemorate soldiers who served in WWI, and continues to include the names of service men and women from every war fought since.

Australian artist Charles Wheeler’s painting Barwon River was presented to J.A Thear, Mayor of Geelong, to celebrate the opening of the Barwon Bridge.
