1960

1960 marked the construction of the Alcoa smelter at Point Henry. The smelter, which commenced production in 1962, manufactured aluminium right up until it was closed in 2014. The site is currently being decommissioned, and is expected to become a community site in the future.

Alcoa World Alumina Australia gifted several works to Geelong Gallery over the years, including this painting titled High Noon by Michael Shannon. This image depicts colourful beach bungalows juxtaposed against an otherwise barren setting, a mysterious light source illuminating the scene.
