1964

In 1964 the Geelong Art Gallery Board decided that Geelong Gallery would shift its focus to the collection and promotion of contemporary Australian art, which was gaining popularity at the time, and that a permanent Education Officer would be established.

The role of Education Officer was filled by G Binns, an art teacher from the Geelong Teachers’ College and Geelong High School.

One of the acquisitions for the permanent collection this year was Rope walker by the young Italian-Australian artist George Baldessin. Baldessin was well known for his sculptural work and printmaking, considering the two mediums complementary to one another.
