In 1966, Geelong Gallery raised $15,000 toward the construction of two new gallery spaces connecting Geelong Gallery to the Geelong Library, a main foyer that meets Little Malop Street and a loading dock, kitchen and lecture room on the eastern side of the building.
Geelong Gallery sought additional support from the Victorian Government to fund the new spaces. $50,000 was announced for the construction plans in the state budget, leaving Geelong Gallery only $10,000 to reach the project goal. Over the following three years, Geelong Gallery allocated additional capital funds to realise the upgrade.
1966 saw many new acquisitions to the permanent collection, including six works presented by political satirist and cartoonist Bruce Petty. Pictured is his pen and ink drawing Theatre, which offers an insight to the world of musical theatre through a satirical lens.
