1969

In 1969, the United States won the space race when Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon.

Stephen Rendall’s work Nineteen sixty nine is a painting of collaged images derived from a commemorative publication marking the anniversary of the 1969 Moon landing, depicting the Moon and emphasising its grey tonal range.

His work reminds us that our experience of the Moon is largely a mediated one: we experience it through the lenses of telescopes, photography and film.
