2020

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic saw Geelong Gallery close its doors for extended periods for the first time since the current building opened in 1915. Excluding closures for expansion or renovation, the only other period when visitation was restricted was during the Spanish Flu in 1919.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, a host of incredible exhibitions continued online and in-person when restrictions were lifted.

Among these was Jacky Redgate—HOLD ON, Kate Beynon—kindred spirits and Scenic Victoria—Land, sea, city, all available to explore in the Geelong Gallery virtual space.

In early 2020 Geelong Gallery hosted The Look, a touring exhibition from Canberra’s National Portrait Gallery. Open for less than 2 weeks, The Look included photographic portraits of extraordinary Australians from a diverse array of fields including theatre, sport, art, music, fashion, literature, film, and more.
