Dean Bowen was born in Maryborough in 1957, where he spent much of his childhood admiring the surrounding flora and fauna of the Australian bush. Having decided to become an artist at an early age, Bowen moved to the Melbourne in 1974 to study art. He received a Diploma in Fine Arts from RMIT in 1976, a Master of Arts in 1993 and a PhD from Monash University in 1999. Bowen has been exhibiting paintings, bronze sculptures and prints in solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and internationally for around 30 years. He has held over 60 solo exhibitions in Australia, France, Japan, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Bowen has also received a number of major sculpture commissions and awards including the Colas Foundation Commission (Paris, France, 2010), 1st International Print Biennial of Beijing (China, 2000), and the Daikin Industries Prize Osaka Print Triennale (Japan, 1997), Hamilton Art Gallery Bronze commission (2013) to name only a few.
