2000

In 2000, Geelong was discussed as a possible location for a Guggenheim modern art museum: a satellite of the New York institution. The City pledged $100,000 to the idea, which was supported by then Premier Steve Bracks and then CoGG Mayor Michael Crutchfield.

Although this plan didn’t come to fruition, Geelong Gallery has an incredible range of modern and contemporary art to share with audiences, including Euan Heng’s Custodian, which was acquired in 2000.

Heng is a Scottish-born artist who arrived in Australia in 1977. Between 1960–70 he was engaged in various occupations including four years working as a merchant seaman travelling the world, an aspect of his life that features in his works.
